OpenSRS email accounts support mailbox storage from 5 GB to 100 GB. To raise an individual mailbox above the current company and domain ceilings, you must first raise the maximum quota at both the company and domain levels in the Mail Administration Console (MAC). This guide walks through that sequence so you can apply the new size to the user without errors.
How quota inheritance works
Each email account inherits a maximum allowed size from its domain, and each domain inherits its maximum from the company. A user mailbox can never be set larger than the domain max, and a domain max cannot exceed the company max. If you want to set a mailbox to 20 GB but the company max is 15 GB, you must raise the company to 20 GB, then the domain to 20 GB, before editing the mailbox.
Note: OpenSRS measures storage in megabytes using 1 GB = 1024 MB. To set a 10 GB mailbox, enter 10240 MB.
Before you begin
- Confirm your admin role in the MAC is set to company or super. Without these roles, you cannot change company- or domain-level maximums and must contact OpenSRS Support.
- Identify which cluster hosts your email domain so you log in to the correct MAC: Cluster A MAC login or Cluster B MAC login.
- Review the available storage tiers and pricing in the OpenSRS Email Service Billing article before increasing storage.
- Convert any GB value to MB using 1 GB = 1024 MB.
Update the max quota
Step 1: Raise the company-level max quota
- Sign in to the MAC on the cluster that hosts your email domain.
- Click your company name in the left toolbar. The Settings tab opens and shows the Defaults for new domains section, which lists your company quota and max quota.
- Replace the current value in the Max quota field with the new amount in MB.
- Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Update.
Step 2: Raise the domain-level max quota
- Use the search bar in the top-left corner to find the email domain.
- Open the Defaults for new users tab. The page shows the domain quota and max quota.
- Replace the current value in the Max quota field with the new amount in MB.
- Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Update.
Step 3: Update the individual mailbox
- Use the search bar in the top-left corner to find the email account.
- On the Settings tab for the account, locate the Sending & receiving section.
- Enter the new storage value in the Quota (MB) field.
- Scroll down and click Update.
Tip: After raising the mailbox to the new size, return the domain-level and company-level max quotas to their original values. Lowering the ceilings back does not affect the mailbox you just resized — it only prevents accidental future increases beyond your standard policy.
Next steps
- Verify the new quota in the user's mailbox. Have the user sign in to Webmail or check the Quota (MB) value in the MAC to confirm the new size is active.
- Review billing impact. Larger mailboxes are billed at higher tiers. See the OpenSRS Email Service Billing article for current tier pricing.
- Contact OpenSRS Support for mailboxes larger than 20 GB. Sizes above 20 GB require Support assistance.
