Your hosted email account can synchronize calendars and contacts with your devices using two open standards: CalDAV for calendars and CardDAV for contacts. Once set up, events and contacts created in Webmail appear on your device, and changes sync in both directions after a refresh. This guide covers setup on iOS and through the DAVx and OpenSync apps on Android.
About CalDAV and CardDAV
CalDAV synchronizes calendar data across devices using Apple's iCalendar format. It is compatible with Android, Gmail, macOS, iOS 5 and later, Outlook, and Thunderbird.
CardDAV synchronizes contact data, including individual contacts and groups, across devices. Like importing and exporting vCards, it keeps all your contact data in sync, and it works with Android, Gmail, macOS, iOS 5 and later, Outlook, Thunderbird, and other platforms.
Before you begin
- Email credentials. You need your full email address and password.
- Server hostname. Use mail.yourdomain.com, or check with your email administrator. You can also use the alternative hostname for your email cluster (see the reference below).
Warning: If your domain does not have an SSL certificate, you will see a warning during setup. To continue adding the account, accept the warning.
Step 1: Set up CalDAV on iOS
After setup, events from your Webmail calendars appear in the Calendar app on your device, and changes made in Webmail appear after a refresh.
- Open Settings and select Calendars.
- Tap Account, then Add Account.
- Select Other.
- Choose Add CalDAV Account.
- Complete the required fields, then tap Next.
Field | Value |
|---|---|
Server | Enter mail.yourdomain.com, or check with your email administrator. |
User Name | Enter your email address. |
Password | Enter your email password. |
Description | Auto-populated from the Server field. You can edit this if you want. |
Step 2: Set up CalDAV with DAVx or OpenSync
On Android, you can connect using the DAVx or OpenSync apps. After setup, your calendars appear in Google Calendar or any other app that supports CalDAV.
- Add a New Account.
- Select Login with URL and username.
- Enter the base URL https://mail.yourdomain.com/caldav/youremailaddress, your email address as the username, and your email password.
- Tap Next.
- Select the calendar you want to sync.
Note: Always include the https:// prefix in the base URL. The SSL certificate requires the full URL.
Step 3: Set up CardDAV on iOS
After setup, your Webmail contacts and groups appear in the Contacts app, and changes made in Webmail appear after a refresh.
- Open Settings and select Contacts.
- Tap Account, then Add Account.
- Choose Add CardDAV Account.
Step 4: Set up CardDAV with OpenSync
On Android, you can connect contacts using OpenSync. After setup, your contacts appear in your contacts app.
- Add a New Account.
- Select Login with URL and username.
- Enter the base URL https://mail.yourdomain.com/carddav/youremailaddress, your email address as the username, and your email password.
- Tap Next.
Alternative hostnames
When you configure CalDAV or CardDAV, you can use your own domain name in the URL or the alternative hostname for your email cluster. To find out which cluster you are on, see which email cluster am I on.
Cluster | Alternative hostname |
|---|---|
Cluster A | emailhome.com |
Cluster B | mailconfig.net |
If you use an alternative hostname, enter the full URL during setup, including the https:// prefix, because of the SSL certificate. For example, use https://mail.emailhome.com rather than mail.emailhome.com. Complete URLs look like this:
- https://mail.emailhome.com/carddav/youremailaddress/default
Next steps
- Confirm which email cluster your account is on.
- Review your Webmail Settings, including the External access section for client sync details.
