Troubleshooting Cloudflare Proxy Blocking DNS Verification

This guide helps troubleshoot and resolve cases where Cloudflare proxy settings prevent successful DNS verification, often resulting in "Too Many Redirects" errors after DNS configuration.

Issue

  • You've confirmed that the Cloud Hosting platform reports the site is ready.
  • However, when visiting the domain, you encounter a "Too Many Redirects" error.
  • This typically occurs because Cloudflare's proxy is interfering with DNS verification, preventing the successful setup of the site.

Steps to Resolve

Step 1: Disable Proxy for _acme-challenge CNAME

  1. Log in to your Cloudflare Dashboard.
  2. Go to DNS settings.
  3. Locate the _acme-challenge CNAME record.
  4. Click the orange cloud icon to disable proxying (it should now display as DNS Only).
  5. Wait a few minutes for Cloudflare to update the DNS settings.

Result: Once proxying is disabled, your hosting platform should complete DNS verification successfully.

Step 2: Verify HTTPS Settings

  1. In the Cloudflare Dashboard, navigate to SSL/TLS settings.
  2. Set TLS Mode to Full (Strict).
  3. Save changes.

Result: This ensures proper SSL encryption between Cloudflare and your server.

Step 3: Clear Cloudflare Cache

  1. In the Cloudflare Dashboard, go to Caching.
  2. Click Purge Everything to remove old cached redirects and outdated settings.

Result: Clears any stuck redirects that may cause looping behavior.

Step 4 (Optional): Enable Developer Mode

  1. Go to Caching settings in the Cloudflare Dashboard.
  2. Turn on Developer Mode.

Note: Developer Mode disables Cloudflare caching temporarily (automatically turns off after a few hours). Useful for troubleshooting live changes without cache interference.

Final Step: Verify Site Accessibility

Visit your website and confirm that it loads without redirect errors.

Success: Your site should now be live, accessible, and SSL-secured.

Additional Notes

  • Developer Mode is optional but can help during active troubleshooting.
  • Always verify that only the _acme-challenge CNAME record is set to DNS Only — do not turn off proxying for your main A/CNAME records unless intentional.
  • If the issue persists after these steps, contact support at cloudhosting@opensrs.com.
