SFTP Guide

OpenSRS Cloud Hosting is currently in closed beta and is available only to participating resellers. To sign up for Cloud Hosting, visit opensrs.com/hosting

This guide explains how to connect to your website via Secure File Transfer Protocol (SFTP), best practices for managing files, and important notes about retention and account status.

Connecting via SFTP

Requirements

  • An SFTP client (e.g., FileZilla, Cyberduck)
  • Your unique SFTP credentials, found on your order under the Connectivity tab

⚠️ Important: The SFTP password is not displayed in the Hosting Manager for security reasons. You must set your password manually by clicking on the Set Password option. If you lose your password, it cannot be recovered, but you can reset it using the same option.

Steps to Connect

  1. Open your SFTP client.
  2. Enter the following information:
    • Host: Your provided hostname
    • Username: Your provided username
    • Password: Your password
    • Port: 22
  3. Connect and browse the remote site directory.

First-Time FTP Access

  • To access FTP for the first time, set the password in the Hosting Manager.
  • This step ensures a secure, user-defined password is in place before connecting.

Password Reset & Recovery

  • SFTP passwords are not displayed in the control panel for security reasons.
  • There is no way to retrieve an existing password once it has been set.
  • If the password is forgotten, reset it to a new secure one through the control panel.

Account & Access

In Closed Beta, each site includes a single SFTP account. Creating or deleting SFTP accounts aren't available.

Access is limited to file transfer over SFTP. Interactive shell (SSH) access is not available. Although SFTP connects on port 22, no command-line/shell session is provided.

File Management Warnings

⚠️ Do Not Modify Critical Files Without Caution. Files such as wp-config.php and .htaccess are essential for your website's operation. Modifying these without understanding their function can break your site.

Best Practices

  • Always create a backup before making changes to any critical files.
  • Use your SFTP client to download a copy of files locally as a backup.

Best Practices & Troubleshooting

  • Maintain a consistent backup routine.
  • Keep file names and folder structures organized.
  • Remove unused plugins or themes via the WordPress Dashboard instead of deleting folders via SFTP.
  • Reset your SFTP password to something unique and secure — minimum 20 characters with at least one number, one uppercase letter, and one symbol (@!#$*&).
