.JP Domain Policies

.JP is the ccTLD for Japan.

Registration Details

Registration details can be found in the TLD reference chart.

Registration Requirements

Both natural persons and corporations can register .JP domain names, and they may register any number of domains. Local presence is required.

Mandatory contacts:

  • Registrant
  • Admin
  • Technical

Mandatory fields for all required contacts:

  • First Name
  • Last Name
  • Organization Name*
  • Street Address
  • City
  • State
  • Postal Code
  • Country
  • Phone Number
  • Email

* If the contact is an individual, the Organization Name field must be completed with the real name of the individual. Role‑based contacts are not accepted.

Residency Requirements

The owner and/or administrative contact of any .JP domain must be located in Japan.

Here’s a cleaned-up Transfers section you can add directly to the .JP Domain Policies article. I’ve kept the content intact but tightened wording, normalized capitalization, and formatted it to match typical OpenSRS KB style.

Transfers

.JP transfers are supported at OpenSRS.

The Registrant is required to contact the losing Registrar prior to submitting the transfer request and notify them that they will receive an email asking for their approval to transfer the domain. If the current Registrar requires any documentation in order to approve the transfer, the Registrant should have this done before the Transfer order is submitted.

Once the order is submitted the transfer will be initiated and the first email will be sent to the e-mail address in WHOIS for authorization. Once this authorization is approved, the Registry will then send a second request to the current Registrar to provide their authorization.

Notes:

  • If a transfer order is submitted without a valid JP address, OpenSRS will apply a free local presence service allowing the order to proceed.
    • If the local presence service is used, it must be changed prior to transferring the domain away.
  • Transfers incur a charge equal to a 1 year renewal and do not extend the domain's expiration date upon completion.

A transfer request cannot be made for a domain if:

  • The domain's status is suspended
  • The domain's status is "user-reserved"
  • The domain is expiring within the next 30 days
  • The domain has no valid contact E-mail address in the domain's WHOIS information
  • The domain's contacts are using the losing registrars LP service for a local JP address
    • If you are using your current Registrars local presence this must be turned off before the transfer is initiated, as all transfer requests which have GMO's company address including the postal code [150-8512] in their registrant information is automatically declined by their system.
  • A transfer request has already been made for the domain.

Outgoing transfers require approval from the losing registrar as well as the administrative contact. Authcodes are not necessary for outgoing transfers, but can be requested from support if required.

Owner Changes

Owner updates can be processed using the standard contact update processes. No documentation is required on this request. It is processed manually, typically within 1–2 business days.

If the updated owner address is located in Japan, then the name and address will be updated at the registry.

If the updated owner address is not located in Japan, then only the name, organization, and email fields will be updated at the registry. For the address fields, the free local presence service in Japan will be used.

Please note: The owner address is not displayed in the public WHOIS for .JP. If the local presence service is used, an owner update with a Japanese address must be performed before any transfer away is possible. Transfers away with the local presence enabled are not supported.
