.ZA is the TLD for South Africa, regulated by ZA Central Registry (ZACR). OpenSRS offers domain name registrations for the following third-level domains: .CO.ZA, .NET.ZA, .ORG.ZA and .WEB.ZA.  There is no residency requirement for .ZA.
Note: ZACR has released a recent COVID-19 related policy update on website requirements.

Registration details

Registration details are found in the TLD reference chart.

Website requirements

ZACR has posted a recent update requiring a call to action for domain owners. In a bid to create more awareness around COVID-19, the Republic of South Africa's government has called on all .ZA domain name holders that have an associated website to create a landing page with a visible link to WWW.SACORONAVIRUS.CO.ZA. For more details, see section 5.1.4 of Regulation No. 43164 published on Thursday, Mar 26, 2020.

Nameserver requirements

Once a nameserver update is submitted, no changes to the update are possible until the update is either cancelled or completed. Updates may take up to 30 minutes to complete. SystemDNS name servers are acceptable to use during domain registration.

.ZA domain nameservers must be authoritative for the domain; otherwise, the nameserver update will fail. Before the registry approves the nameserver update, a zone file must already be set-up for the domain, plus, the nameservers must respond to queries made about the domain.

Renewals

Renewal requests should be submitted before the domain's expiry date to renew the domain.

Ensure auto-renew is set to disabled status up to approximately two days before the expiration date; otherwise, the domain will renew.

Transfers

.ZA domains do not require authorization codes. Transfers will take between 5-10 days to complete.

The gaining registrar initiates the transfer process. Upon transfer start, the registrant, as well as the losing registrar, will receive a confirmation email by the registry.  If the registrant confirms, the registry will complete the transfer.

Transfers between registrars will dispatch a transfer validation email to the registrant contact. Transfers between resellers will send a transfer validation email to the administrative contact. The registrant must confirm transfers away via the email sent by the .ZA registry.

Changes of ownership

.ZA changes of ownership follow the procedure outlined in our changing domain ownership guide. Contact updates take five days to complete. Once a contact update is submitted, no changes to the update are possible until the update is either cancelled or finished. Contact updates may be withdrawn manually at the registry by contacting our support team.
