Domain deletion lets you remove a new registration made in error and receive a refund, within limits. A refund is available for new gTLD registrations only when the domain is deleted within four days of registration, and a small processing fee applies. Renewals cannot be reversed or refunded.
About deletions and refunds
Deletions exist to correct genuine registration mistakes, not to return unwanted domains for credit. Two limits apply to deletions that qualify for a refund.
- Time limit. A refund is issued only if a new gTLD domain is deleted within four days of registration.
- Volume limit. You can delete up to 10% of your registrations from the last 30 days. For example, if you registered 100 domains in the past 30 days, you can delete up to 10 of them.
A processing fee is applied to each refund. You can view the refunded amount in the Billing and Payments section of the Reseller Control Panel.
Step 1: Revoke the domain
Delete a new registration directly from the domain's settings.
- In the Reseller Control Panel, click Domains and select the domain you want to revoke.
- In the domain settings section, click Revoke Domain.
- Click Submit to confirm the revocation.
Domains registered more than four days ago
To remove a domain that has been registered for more than four to five days, the domain owner must contact the Tucows compliance department directly. No refund is given in this case, whether the charge was a new registration or a renewal.
If a registrant no longer wants a domain but the refund window has passed, disable auto-renew so the domain expires at the end of its term. In the meantime you can park the domain with advertisements to generate revenue, or point it to non-functioning nameservers so no website appears.
Domain renewals
Renewals cannot be reversed. Once your system receives a renewal order, it is applied immediately at the registry level. There is no way to recover money from the registry for domain years bought through a renewal, so renewals made in error cannot be refunded.
Warning: If you submit a renewal and are unsure whether it was applied, contact OpenSRS Support before submitting it again to avoid a duplicate, non-refundable charge.
Next steps
- Generate revenue from unused domains with the Parked Pages Program.
- For domains past the refund window, contact the Tucows compliance department.
