.IT Domain Policies

.IT is the TLD for Italy.

Registration details

Registration details can be found in the TLD reference chart.

Residency requirements

The registration of a domain name in the ccTLD .it is permitted only to persons who have citizenship, residence or a registered office in the countries of the European Economic Area (EEA), the Vatican, the Republic of San Marino, and Switzerland.

WHOIS Privacy

As of Feb 2019, Whois contact privacy is only applicable to entity types 'Persons, Foreign and Italian'

Nameserver & DNS Requirements

In order to activate a .IT domain, you must provide at least two functional nameservers. Nameservers can be provided when registering the .IT domain or when activating the .IT domain. All DNS zones must be configured beforehand.

The following DNS requirements must be pre-configured for any domain name registered:

  • The servers’ IP addresses must be static and correspond to those actually associated with them.
  • The first nameserver must be the same as indicated in the Server of Authority (SOA) record of the domain name.
  • A CNAME must not be associated with the domain name.
  • The name of the nameserver specified in the SOA cannot be a CNAME.
  • At least one MX or A record must exist for the domain name.
  • Where an MX record is listed, it must not have an associated CNAME.
  • Whenever interrogated, the servers must not give the following responses: not responding, not reachable, not running, non-existent domain, host not found, server failure, query failed.
  • Indicated nameservers must be authoritative for the domain name.
  • Check for the correct nameserver configuration by visiting http://dns-check.nic.it/

The domain name and nameserver details are transferred to the zone file within 24 hours, after which time the domain name becomes active.

Note: Nameserver changes can take up to five days to complete pending validation by the Registry. During that time, the domain's status is pendingUpdate, and the old nameservers continue to be displayed.  If the name servers are properly configured, the nameservers will update right away.   If not, the registry will continue checking for 5 days.  If the servers are still not correctly configured after that, the registry will remove the new servers and relists the servers previously associated with the domain.  If, after 30 days, the DNS requirements are not met, the IT registry will delete the domain.

The Registry will update the dns zone twelve times a day, precisely at: 1.00 am, 3.00 am, 5.00 am, 7.00 am, 9.00 am, 11.00 am, 1.00 pm, 3.00 pm, 5.00 pm, 7.00 pm, 9.00 pm and 11.00 pm.  If the name servers were modified or disrupted due to expiry, please wait ~15 minutes after the times listed here for the change to take effect.

When using OpenSRS systemdns name servers, the first few nameserver tests may fail with errors "Not authoritative answer" but after a few tests it should pass.

Renewals

All .IT domains have a registration term of one year, and are automatically renewed.

Transfers

To transfer a .IT domain name to OpenSRS

  1. In the Order Management section, enter the domain name in the Transfer a domain field, and then click Transfer. The Transfers for .it page appears.
  2. Complete the Transfer Form.
  3. Click Submit.

The current Registrar has five days to confirm or deny the transfer. If there is no response after five days, the transfer automatically completes, and a new one year registration period begins.

Changes of ownership

When you change the registrant information, there is no charge applied, and the registration term does not change.
To change ownership of a .IT domain
Log in to the Manage Web Interface and enter the new owner's information in the Manage Profile section. For more information on the Manage Web Interface, see The Manage Web Interface (MWI).

Domains in status inactive/to be reassigned

Domains carrying a WHOIS status of inactive/to be reassigned are a result of a dispute resolution process with the .it Registry.
The plantiff who submitted the dispute with the registry won the rights to the domain, and the domain enters a 30 day window for said plantiff to claim.
At this time OpenSRS does not support the registrations of domains won as part of this dispute resolution process.
We plan on implementing this feature in the future with no communicable timeline for completion.

Additional Registrant Verification

The .IT registry may flag Registrant contact data found to have incomplete or inaccurate information. In these instances, the registry will reach out to both the Registrant and OpenSRS support team.
Our support team will reach out to resellers to obtain valid registrant contact data, this may include corrections of submitted data and/or documentation to validate the provided details (such as, identity card, passport, tax code, certificate of incorporation, etc.)
If flagged, domains associated with the registrant contact will continue to resolve for the initial 30 days with the following statuses applied "serverDeleteProhibited, serverTransferProhibited, serverUpdateProhibited". After the initial 30 day period if no corrections have been made, a 45 day period will begin where domains associated with the registrant contact will stop resolving and have the following statues applied "Inactive, serverDeleteProhibited, serverTransferProhibited, serverUpdateProhibited". This allows for up to 75 total days for registrant data corrections to be made. Once the updates are verified by the .IT registry the holds will be removed.
Registrant Contact data that has not been updated after 75 days will see associated domains placed on an "inactive/serverHold" status by the .IT Registry and fail to resolve. These domains will be deleted by the .IT registry on their expiration date.

Additional Registrant Verification:
As part of the EU NIS 2 Directive, NIC.IT (Registro.it) has introduced stricter requirements for verifying registrant contact data. The following rules apply:
Complete and Accurate Data
  • It is mandatory to submit complete and accurate registrant data during the registration process.
Flagged Data
  • Any incomplete or inaccurate data will be flagged by the Registry Operator (Registro.it) and must be verified within 75 days from the date of the initial notification.
Consequences of Non-Compliance
  • If the data is not corrected within the allotted time, all domain(s) associated with the flagged contact will be placed on serverHold and deleted upon their expiration date.

Verification Process

Registry Notification

When registrant data is incomplete or inaccurate, the .IT registry (Registro.it) flags the registrant contact and notifies:

  • The Registrant directly, and
  • OpenSRS (the accredited registrar).

OpenSRS Support Contact

  • OpenSRS Support will email the Reseller requesting corrections or additional documentation (e.g., ID card, passport, Tax ID) to validate the data.
  • OpenSRS support will inform resellers of the success or failure of the registrant contact update.

Registrant Response

  • The Reseller must respond to the verification request within the specified time frame. Failure to respond or provide valid data will result in all associated domain(s) expiring and ultimately being deleted.

Further Documentation

  • If the data still cannot be verified, the Reseller may be required to submit additional documents until the information is deemed accurate.

Important: Once a Registrant contact is flagged, all domains associated with that contact are affected and subject to the same compliance timeline.

Important Timelines

0 – 30 Days (Initial Request)

Email Notification

  • The Registrant is informed that their data has been flagged as incorrect/incomplete by the registry
  • The Reseller is also informed of the data flag by OpenSRS Support.

Domain Status

Domains remain active but are assigned the following statuses:
  • serverDeleteProhibited
  • serverTransferProhibited
  • serverUpdateProhibited

Data Correction

  • If correct data is submitted during this period, domains revert to “active” status.

31 – 45 Days (Follow-Up Request)

Follow-Up Notification

A second reminder is sent by the registry to the Registrant if no corrections have been made.

Domain Resolution

If the Registrant still has not updated the data by Day 45, the associated domains stop resolving and receive:

  • Inactive
  • serverDeleteProhibited
  • serverTransferProhibited
  • serverUpdateProhibited

After 75 Days

Deletion on Expiration

If corrections are not made by Day 75, the Registry will delete the domain(s) on their expiration date. At this stage, the following statuses are applied:

  • Inactive
  • serverHold

Note: All domain names linked to the incorrect or incomplete contact data will be deleted upon their expiry if verification is not completed in time

Registry Email to Registrant

Registrant contacts who are flagged may receive Emails from the registry with the following subject(s), These notices indicate the start of data verification, successful data verification, un-successful data verification, unsuccessful verification with registrar deletion, as well as the ending of the initial 30 day period.

- Start of data accuracy procedure - Registrant <org of the Registrant>

- Successful conclusion of data accuracy procedure - Registrant <org of Registrant>

- Unsuccessful conclusion of data accuracy procedure - Registrant <org of the Registrant>

- Domains deactivation of data accuracy procedure - Registrant <org of the Registrant>

- Unsuccessful conclusion of data accuracy verification procedure due to expiry of the terms - Registrant <org of the Registrant>

- Unsuccessful conclusion of data accuracy verification procedure and domain name <domain name> cancellation
