.JP Domain Policies

.JP is the ccTLD for Japan.

Registration Details

Registration details can be found in the TLD reference chart.

Registration Requirements

Both natural persons and corporations can register .JP domain names, and they may register any number of domains. Local presence is required.

Mandatory contacts:

  • Registrant
  • Admin
  • Technical

Mandatory fields for all required contacts:

  • First Name
  • Last Name
  • Organization Name*
  • Street Address
  • City
  • State
  • Postal Code
  • Country
  • Phone Number
  • Email

* If the contact is an individual, the Organization Name field must be completed with the real name of the individual. Role‑based contacts are not accepted.

Residency Requirements

The owner and/or administrative contact of any .JP domain must be located in Japan.

Transfers

Transfers of .JP domains into the OpenSRS service are not supported.

Outgoing transfers require approval from the losing registrar as well as the administrative contact. Authcodes are not necessary for outgoing transfers, but can be requested from support if required.

Owner Changes

Owner updates can be processed using the standard contact update processes. No documentation is required on this request. It is processed manually, typically within 1–2 business days.

If the updated owner address is located in Japan, then the name and address will be updated at the registry.

If the updated owner address is not located in Japan, then only the name, organization, and email fields will be updated at the registry. For the address fields, the free local presence service in Japan will be used.

Please note: The owner address is not displayed in the public WHOIS for .JP. If the local presence service is used, an owner update with a Japanese address must be performed before any transfer away is possible. Transfers away with the local presence enabled are not supported.
