This guide covers how to update domain contact information (owner, admin, tech, or billing) in OpenSRS, along with key caveats to check before making the change.
Steps
- Log into the OpenSRS Control Panel.
- Go to Domains and search for/select the domain you need to update.
- Click Edit to pen the domain record and go to Contact Information.
- Edit the relevant contact fields — name, organization, email, address, VAT ID, etc. — for the owner, admin, tech, or billing contact as needed.
- Save the changes.
Note: If the domain has a default lock enabled, remove the lock in the Control Panel first, otherwise the contact update may not go through.
Important Caveats
Owner/Registrant Contact Changes
- Changing the registrant (owner) contact triggers ICANN's Change of Registrant (COR) / trade process, which applies a 60-day transfer lock to the domain.
- You can avoid the lock by selecting "Opt-Out of 60-day Transfer Lock" when starting the trade.
TLD-Specific Behavior
For specific TLD requirements and behavior, please consult our TLD reference guide.
- For some TLDs, registrant contact changes made in the Control Panel are not automatically synced to the registry.
- For TLDs requiring registrant verification, an owner contact update sends a verification email to the registrant. The change is only applied at the registry once the registrant approves; a decline or no response within the window cancels the pending request.
- Some registries (e.g.
.org, non-owner contact types) may not expose all contact fields in the Control Panel UI. These may require a separate support procedure.
