The Contacts tab is your address book inside Webmail. Add people, group them, search them, import a list from another app, and send messages without remembering anyone's email address. This guide covers the everyday tasks.
The Contacts layout
Contacts has three panes: Groups on the left, the contacts list in the middle, and contact details on the right. Drag and drop works throughout — for example, you can drag a contact onto a group to add them to it.
Add a contact
You can add contacts in two ways: directly in the Contacts tab, or from an email you received.
From the Contacts tab
- Click Contacts in the sidebar.
- Click Create in the toolbar.
- Fill in the blank contact card that appears in the details pane.
- Click Save.
From an email
- Open the email from the person you want to add.
- Click the sender's email address in the header.
- Choose Add to address book.
The contact is saved automatically. To add them to one or more groups, open the contact and switch to the Groups tab — every contact belongs to the default Contacts group, and can belong to as many other groups as you'd like.
Select multiple contacts
- Open the contacts list.
- Click Select at the top.
- Tick the checkboxes next to the contacts you want.
From there you can drag the selected contacts into a group, or click Compose in the sidebar to start a message addressed to all of them at once.
Note: The contact details pane doesn't show information for multiple selections — that's expected.
Search for a contact
The basic search at the top of the contacts list checks display name, email, first name, last name, and all fields.
Advanced search
- Click Contacts.
- Click Search in the toolbar.
- In the Advanced search pop-up, fill in as many fields as you can to narrow the results. You can search any field from a contact card.
- Click Search.
Matching contacts appear in the list pane. Search criteria stays in place if you switch between tabs.
Create a group
Groups are great for people you email together often — your team, your family, a club. The Groups list is alphabetical, and contacts can be in as many groups as you want.
- At the top of the Groups pane, click the menu icon (three vertical dots).
- Choose Add group.
- Type a name for the group.
- Click Save.
Add contacts to a group
You can add a contact to a group by opening the contact and toggling groups on the Groups tab, or by dragging contacts onto a group.
- Open the contacts list.
- Click Select and tick the contacts you want.
- Either drag and drop them onto a group, or click More > Assign to group.
Tip: Dragging a contact from one group to another copies it — the contact stays in the original group too. To move it entirely, remove it from the original group afterward.
Remove contacts from a group
- Click the group in the Groups list.
- Click Select and tick the contacts you want to remove.
- Click More.
- Choose Remove from group.
Note: You can't remove a contact from the default Contacts group. To take them out of your address book entirely, delete the contact instead.
Rename or delete a group
- Click the group in the Groups list.
- Click the menu icon (three vertical dots) at the top of the Groups pane.
- Choose Rename group or Delete group.
- If renaming, type the new name and click Save. If deleting, confirm in the pop-up.
Import contacts from another app
You can bring contacts in from another email program if they're saved as vCard or CSV files. Most apps can export to one of those formats.
- Click Contacts.
- Click Import in the toolbar.
- Click Choose file, pick your vCard or CSV file, then click Open.
- From the Import group assignments drop-down, choose a group for the imported contacts. If you skip this, they're imported into the default Contacts group only.
- Tick Replace your entire address book if you want the import to overwrite everything you already have. Leave it unticked to add the imported contacts to what's already there.
- Click Import.
- When you see the confirmation, close the pop-up with the X.
Warning: Replace your entire address book deletes every existing contact before importing. Use it only if you're certain you want a clean slate.
