Configuring gTLD and ccTLD Display in Availability Search Results

When a user runs a domain availability search in the OpenSRS Control Panel or RWI, the results page lists not just the requested name but also a row of suggested TLD alternatives. This article describes the reseller-level setting that controls which TLDs appear in that list and explains how the setting interacts with TLD pricing and customer presentation.

Where the TLD display list applies

The TLD display list controls availability results in three places:

  • Reseller Control Panel availability search. The list of alternative TLDs shown alongside the requested name.
  • RWI bulk lookup. The default TLD set checked when no explicit list is supplied.
  • Storefront availability widget (if you operate a Storefront and have not overridden it at the store level).

The setting does not change which TLDs you can register — you can still register any OpenSRS-supported TLD from the registration form regardless of whether it appears in your display list.

How the display list is structured

The list has two parts:

  • Generic top-level domains (gTLDs). .com, .net, .org, .info, .biz, the broad "new gTLD" namespace (.app, .dev, .online, etc.).
  • Country-code top-level domains (ccTLDs). .ca, .us, .uk, .de, .au, .nz, .eu, and many others. Each ccTLD is independent — selecting one does not enable others.

Each TLD appears with a checkbox. Selected TLDs are shown in availability results in the order they appear in the configuration screen.

Configure the TLD display list

From the top navigation, select Profile > Preferences > Default TLD List. The configuration page lists all OpenSRS-supported TLDs grouped by category. Check the box next to each TLD you want to include in availability search results, then click Save. Your changes take effect on the next availability search.

Tip: Order matters — most resellers list .com first, followed by .net and .org, then the regional ccTLDs for their primary market. Drag-and-drop reordering (where the UI supports it) lets you push high-margin new gTLDs above lower-margin defaults.

Recommended starting list

If you are configuring a new reseller account, the following TLDs cover the majority of customer demand:

  • Core gTLDs: .com, .net, .org, .info, .biz, .co
  • Common new gTLDs: .online, .site, .store, .app, .dev, .io
  • North American ccTLDs: .ca, .us, .mx
  • European ccTLDs: .uk, .de, .fr, .es, .it, .nl, .eu
  • Asia-Pacific ccTLDs: .au, .nz, .jp, .in, .sg

Note: Premium and aftermarket pricing apply to any TLD in your display list. Customers see the premium flag and inflated price in availability results even when the alternative wasn't their primary search. Review Purchasing an Aftermarket Premium Domain to understand how those results are presented.

TLDs with restricted availability

Some ccTLDs require registrant eligibility that the buyer must meet before they can register. Including these in your display list still shows the availability state to customers, but the registration may be rejected at submission if the registrant doesn't qualify. Common examples:

  • .ca — Canadian Presence Requirements (citizens, permanent residents, Canadian organizations).
  • .au — Australian presence with ABN, ACN, or trademark registration.
  • .us — U.S. nexus category.
  • .eu — residency in the European Economic Area.

If you serve a global customer base, include these TLDs only if your customer-facing flow communicates the eligibility requirement before checkout. For the eligibility rules of a specific ccTLD, see TLD Policies.

Internationalized domain names in availability results

Internationalized domain names (IDNs) appear in availability results only for TLDs that have an IDN table registered with OpenSRS. The display list does not control IDN behaviour directly. See Internationalized Domain Name Registrations for full details.

Next steps

  • Test your search. Open Domains > Register a Domain and run a search to confirm the TLDs you selected appear in results.
  • Align with your Storefront. If you run a Storefront, mirror the TLD list in the storefront availability widget so customers see consistent options across surfaces.
  • Review TLD pricing. Each TLD has its own cost basis. Check your OpenSRS reseller pricing before adding niche TLDs that may surprise customers at checkout.
  • Refresh quarterly. New gTLD launches happen on a rolling schedule. Revisit your display list at least quarterly so customers see current options.
