The WHOIS Data Reminder Policy (WDRP) is an ICANN requirement that all registrars present each registrant with their current WHOIS information at least once a year. OpenSRS sends a WDRP message to each registrant on your behalf, giving them a chance to review and correct their contact details. This article explains when the message is sent and what it contains.
About the policy
Under the WDRP, every registrar must remind each registrant of the WHOIS information on file for their domain at least once per year. The reminder includes a link where the registrant can update their information if it is inaccurate. If a registrant does not respond, their current WHOIS information is assumed to be correct.
When the message is sent
The WDRP message is sent to each registrant 120 days before their domain's expiry date. If a domain is registered for more than one year, the message is sent each year, 120 days before the anniversary of the registration date.
Note: Providing false WHOIS information can be grounds for cancellation of a domain registration, so encourage registrants to keep their contact details accurate.
Sample WDRP message
The message is addressed to the registrant and presents the current WHOIS record for the domain. A typical message reads as follows:
Subject: WHOIS Data Confirmation for example.com
From: "Company Inc."
To: registrant@domain.com
ICANN, the organization responsible for the stability of the Internet, requires that each domain name registrant be given the opportunity to correct any inaccurate contact data (WHOIS data) associated with a domain name registration. The message lists the registrant's name, address, and contact details on file for the domain.
To review and update their WHOIS contact information, the registrant logs in to the management interface at manage.opensrs.net. If any information is inaccurate, they should correct it; if everything is accurate, no action is needed. The message also reminds the registrant that providing false WHOIS information can be grounds for cancellation, and links to ICANN's WDRP policy for further questions.
